marketing illuminations for an online world

Share the Email Love with Social Media Tags

Are you looking for a boost in your reader interaction? How about increase web traffic and subscriber base? Good news! Marketing Sherpa brings us yet another case study on how one company boosted its reader interaction by 25% and sky-rocketed their social media standing by simply adding a few extra links in their email communications.

Unable to ignore the social craze any longer, Rob Birgfeld, director of SmartBrief sought to answer the ever-pressing question from his audience. is there really value in social networking? The first step Birgfeld’s team took to answer this was to implement social media sites including Twitter, Facebook, email marketing and a new blog.

While these preliminary efforts did create an impact, the team sought to integrate email marketing and the social media sites tighter together. So they decided to develop a share-to-social functionality to email communications that allowed users to click an icon that automatically uploads a link to their email to the recipient’s social networking account.

After determining the most relevant social networks for their audience, the team started slowly adding the social-share icons to specific email articles allowing users to share that article with their friends on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Boy did it work! Not only did the overall subscriber interaction jump each month after adding the social sharing buttons, but inbound traffic to their social networks have increased dramatically.some sites seeing a 2,000% increase in traffic. And probably the most important impact was seen in conversions of new subscribers. The Smart Brief on Social Media newsletter attracted more than 17,000 subscribers in only five months, with no additional marketing investment!

If you have not yet joined the social media craze, the only question to ask is why not!?! “I don’t think marketers have a choice anymore,” says Birgfeld. “This is the way people are sharing information now, and it’s important to adjust to where your readers are.”

And if you are jumping in with both feet, why not let your subscribers help do the work for you? Adding the social share buttons is the simplest way to spread your marketing message without having to lift a finger. It’s like having an office full of PR representatives without the extra pay roll. And yes, you do need to establish your social media sites if you haven’t already, but in the meantime, let your audience post your message to theirs…you know they have one!
